Also re: Trolls

People you claim to speak for pointing out the consequences of what you do on them. Not abuse. Just a new power dynamic that has opened up to allow people to challenge damaging media narratives.

Using a media platform, while refusing to acknowledge the power that that many readers can have, to silence those people? THAT is abuse. Use of social network within media to close out criticism, THAT is abuse of a power dynamic which often involves really nasty behaviour. Gaslighting is abusive behaviour. Smearing is abusive behaviour. Using influence gained through media, to encourage other people to bite in your defence, THAT is abuse of a power dynamic.

Facing criticism you cannot answer is not abuse, someone pointing out the consequences of your actions on them, is not abuse. Hearing people discuss the effect of what you do, not abuse. Someone refusing to accept the validity of what you are saying because you need them to, is not abuse. Someone refusing to change who they are because it falls outside your understanding and political requirements is not abuse.

Sealed media bubble. Over. You are in the outside world now. Power dynamics have changed.

We all live in a complicated world with people who are different and people who may not like us. The world is big and there are nasties lurking. This is why keeping the internet in perspective is needed, if you are being exposed to this for the first time, then you need to understand this is what the world looks like and it won’t pretend for you. Everyone else knows this.
